My furnace is not running at all. My furnace is running but not heating enough.

Is your thermostat display on and visible?

Is your thermostat control set to HEAT?

Yes No

Is your furnace power on? Try turning the fan to ON using the fan switch on the thermostat to test for power to the furnace.

Is your filter clean? A clogged filter can cause your furnace to overheat and the thermostat display may go blank. If dirty, replace your filter immediately.

Set the thermostat to HEAT and make sure the set temperature is warmer than the current indoor temperature.

Check the circuit breaker in your home’s electrical panel to make sure the furnace (FAU) is in the ON position. Did that help?

Are you supply registers open and blowing air?

Yes No

Dirty filters restrict air flow and you will begin to notice decreased air flow at your furthest duct runs. Eventually dirty/clogged filters will lead to more serious problems. A 1” non-pleated, disposable filter should be changed once-a-month and a pleated, disposable filter should be changed every other month or less, depending on the type. If you don’t change it, the filter will block the proper airflow and strain your furnace.

Return air grilles are larger and are located on the wall, floor, or ceiling (if your furnace is in the attic). Make sure there are no objects, like furniture, blocking the return.

Is the furnace blower motor running?

Is your filter clean? A clogged filter can cause your furnace to overheat and the thermostat display may go blank. If dirty, replace your filter immediately.

Set the thermostat to COOL and make sure the set temperature is lower than the current indoor temperature.

Check the main power switch for your outdoor unit, usually found within a few feet of the unit in a box mounted to the exterior of the house. Make sure it is in the ON position.

Check the circuit breaker in your home’s electrical panel to make sure the furnace (FAU) is in the ON position. Did that help?

Are your supply registers and return air grilles clear?

Are you setting your thermostat to a comfortable temperature in the morning?

Yes No

Is there ice on the indoor or outdoor units?

Yes No

If there is ice on one of the units it can be from a dirty filter, refrigerant issue, or the system being set to a temperature it isn’t capable of reaching. Check the filter and make sure the system is set to a temperature that allows the system to cycle off. Turn the system off until it is completely defrosted (this may take an entire day). Once completely defrosted you may test it again.

On hot days make sure your thermostat is set to a comfortable temperature in the morning. If you leave the system off all day and wait until the late afternoon or evening to turn it on the house may become too warm for your system to be able to cool it down.

If the units are both running and the system isn’t cooling enough, isn’t keeping up on hot days, or is icing up call us to schedule a diagnostic.
